WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Nathaniel Moran (TX-01) released the following statement today after voting in support of H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives with a 219-203 vote:
“Earlier this month, the Biden Administration proposed new Title IX rules that would prohibit public schools and universities from banning male athletes from competing in sporting events with girls and women. The proposed Biden rule would likewise prohibit states from protecting the integrity of women’s and girls’ sports. This ruling would prevent women and girls from competing on a level playing field in sports and it ignored the biological differences between men and women. Title IX was intended to prohibit sex-based discrimination to ensure equal opportunity for women, but this proposed rule would undermine the very intent of Title IX. The consequences of the administration ignoring the biological differences between male and female threatens women’s opportunity in sports and undermines equality. Further, it mocks the notion that there is a creator who perfectly designed men and women differently.
“I was proud to stand alongside House Republicans yesterday to protect the rights of female athletes and their ability to participate in the athletic arena without intrusion by males. Educators and coaches in East Texas understand the differences between men and women and the need to protect the integrity of women’s sports, and I am committed to standing with them. I am appreciative of the work of Rep. Greg Steube (FL-17) and Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (NC-05) for ensuring that we are protecting opportunities for women in sports on a national-level.”
Background:
H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023 will require schools who receive federal funding to recognize sex based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth. This will safeguard female athletic programs by only allowing biological women and girls to participate in a practice, compete, and receive any benefits associated with women’s athletic programs.
