The Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund (PDRF) has issued $200,000 since COVID-19’s spark in mid-March.

The Amarillo Area Foundation reports the Don and Sybil Harring Foundation Board of Directors launched the relief fund in 2006 to provide aid during disasters and crises like wildfires, tornadoes and now COVID-19.

The funds have been spread across 26 counties in the Texas Panhandle, providing various resources like food security programs and childcare for first responders and other essential employees. Moore County Hospital and Hemphill County Hospital District were given enough money to by ventilators, a key need for those battling the coronavirus.

Additional funds were available thanks to a concert series performed on Facebook Live, raising $8,000. The foundation now aims to raise $500,000 for the Application Fund and help assist other nonprofits.

Since its inception, PDRF has had 10 grant cycles, giving more than $564,492 to 51 organizations in the Texas Panhandle.
