WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Nathaniel Moran (TX-01) released the following statement on April 28 regarding President Biden’s nomination of Julie Su to be the next United States Secretary of Labor:

“During Julie Su’s tenure as Secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency and subsequently as the US Deputy Secretary of Labor, Su repeatedly displayed a lack of judgement regarding the needs and concerns of American workers. While serving as California’s Labor and Workforce Secretary, Su supported California’s Assembly Bill 5, which banned a number of long-standing independent contractor relationships and stifled many individuals from advancing in their careers or building small businesses. Instead, it sought to drive up union enrollment by forcing workers into formal employment relationships. Additionally, she was responsible when as much as $31 billion in California unemployment funds were paid out to scammers – the largest exhibition of fraud in California history. The United States does not need someone who lacks both an understanding of good workforce policy and who also lacks the capacity to manage serving in the role of Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor

“California’s corrupt and misguided policies do not reflect the needs or wishes of East Texans, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to reject the nomination of Julie Su for Labor Secretary.”
