WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Nathaniel Moran (TX-01) released the following statement after voting in support of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024, which passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 219-210:

“At every turn, our country faces threats to our security and our way of life: cyber-attacks, Chinese espionage and aggression, terrorist activity, and even radical efforts to push social experiments on our military.

“The Constitution has charged us with providing for the common defense and securing the blessings of liberty. Described as ‘one of the most pro-life, pro-family NDAAs on record’ and the ‘strongest defense bill in recent memory,’ this year’s NDAA fulfills that responsibility. By supporting our men and women in uniform, encouraging innovative technologies, eliminating waste, and removing ‘woke’ policies undermining our military readiness, this legislation equips our nation’s military with the tools needed to face any threat and overcome any challenge.”

Background on the FY24 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

The NDAA is a defense policy bill, typically introduced and reported each year by the House Armed Services Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee. Unlike an appropriations act, the NDAA generally does not provide funding (i.e., budget authority). Instead, the legislation sets policy and authorizes appropriations for the Department of Defense, nuclear weapons and reactor programs of the Department of Energy, and certain other defense-related activities.

The FY24 NDAA prioritizes national security and military families and includes conservative policies to gut the woke political agenda that has no place in our military.  This year’s NDAA focuses on capitalizing on innovation to increase real lethality of the Joint Force, strengthening capabilities and partnerships to counter the Chinese Communist Party’s increased military aggression, adequately equipping our warfighters to complete their missions, and ensuring vigorous oversight of taxpayer dollars at the Pentagon.

  • Authorizes full funding for our national defense while cutting costs and improving efficiency.
  • Supports servicemembers and their families by providing a 5.2% increase in basic pay – the largest raise in over 20 years.
  • Ends Democrat efforts to inject wokeness into the military.
  • Strengthens oversight and fiscal accountability at the Pentagon.
  • Strengthens strategic deterrence, lethal capabilities, and promotes innovation.
  • Counters aggression from the Chinese Communist Party
  • Provides a pathway back to the armed forces for servicemembers who refused to take the COVID vaccine.
  • Provides DoD support in securing the border.
