There were four American Indian students enrolled in Ochiltree County schools in the 2021-22 school year, the same number as in the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Ochiltree County welcomed 2,052 students during the 2021-22 school year.

Among the six schools in Ochiltree County, only Perryton High School and Perryton Kinder enrolled any American Indian students, welcoming two students each in the 2021-22 school year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

“The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students…dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools…gun violence, and mental health issues," claimed the Texas Almanac.
